Relining rather than
digging in Kensington

Putting the surface back is the constrained part

The defect itself is usually small: an open joint, a crack, roots that found a gap of a few millimetres.

What makes excavation awkward on these streets is not the digging, it is the reinstatement. Much of the area sits in the Daceyville Garden Suburb Heritage Conservation Area, where what the outside of a property looks like is regulated rather than a matter of taste.

So a trench across a front garden stops being a plumbing decision and becomes a question for Council about what may be disturbed and how it must be made good.

Relining sidesteps that. The repair happens inside the pipe, through one access point, and the surface is not touched, which is why it is worth more here than the pipe repair alone would suggest.

Local relining guide

When relining is the right call in Kensington

The reinstatement is the regulated part

Much of this area sits in a Heritage Conservation Area, so what happens to the outside of a property is constrained.

Opening a front garden turns a plumbing job into a Council question, and closing it again properly is most of the cost.

A liner removes the question

The repair happens inside the pipe through one access point, so nothing visible changes.

That is worth more here than in a suburb where reinstatement is only a matter of money.

Roots enter at the joint

Older pipework is short lengths joined roughly every metre, and the joint is the weak point rather than the barrel.

A liner seals the run end to end, so there is no gap left for roots to find.

What relining cannot do

It restores the pipe. It cannot change the gradient the pipe was laid at.

Where fall has been lost the answer is excavation and re-lay, and we say so rather than lining over something that returns.

Why we quote both ways

You should be able to compare, so we give the relining figure and the excavation figure for the same defect.

Sometimes digging is genuinely right. In a conservation area it is right less often than elsewhere.

What pipe relining costs in Kensington

Quoted against footage rather than a description. These are indicative 2026 ranges, and the excavation comparison comes with every relining quote.

01

Camera inspection and report $250 – $450

Footage handed over, with the defect marked and located.

02

Junction or short section repair $1,500 – $3,500

A defined defect repaired from inside, through existing access where possible.

03

Full run, house to boundary $4,000 – $9,000

Depending on length and access, with nothing visible disturbed.

04

Root cutting before lining $400 – $700

The line cleared so the liner cures against sound pipe.

05

Excavation comparison included

The dig price for the same defect, so the decision is yours.

The relining figure and the excavation figure for the same defect, so you can weigh them properly.

Step 03
Preparing a drain for relining at a Kensington home

The line prepared

Roots cut back and the run cleaned so the liner cures against sound pipe rather than over debris.

Step 04
Handing over post-relining footage in Kensington

Filmed again afterwards

The finished liner recorded end to end, with footage handed over alongside the warranty.

Same drain blocking every year?

Clearing it again is not the answer. Twenty minutes of footage will show whether a liner finishes it without touching the garden.

Pipe relining questions.

What Kensington locals ask us before booking a plumber.

Why does relining suit a conservation area?

Because the expensive and constrained part of an excavation here is putting the surface back. In a Heritage Conservation Area what the outside of a property looks like is regulated, so reinstating a trench is not simply a matter of laying new turf and moving on. A liner repairs the pipe through an access point and leaves the surface where it is, which removes the question entirely.

Does relining need heritage approval?

That is Council's call rather than ours, and it depends on what the work actually disturbs. What we can say is that a repair which does not alter anything visible is a far smaller question than one that opens a front garden. Ask Council, and we will tell you plainly which category we think the job falls into.

Will it fix a drain with no fall?

No. A liner restores the pipe, it cannot change the gradient the pipe was laid at. If footage shows a length holding water because the fall has gone, that needs excavation and re-lay, and we will tell you which of the two you have before quoting either.

How long does a liner last?

It is a structural repair rather than a patch and is designed in decades. We will not attach a figure to a drain we have not filmed, because it depends entirely on what is left of the host pipe.

How much digging is involved?

Usually one access point, and frequently one that already exists. The repair happens inside the pipe, so gardens, paths and driveways stay as they are.

Can every line be relined?

Most can. A run that has collapsed, or separated so far there is no host pipe to line against, needs excavation. The camera decides it, which is why we film before quoting.

What does relining cost in Kensington?

A camera inspection and report is $250 to $450. A junction or short section repair is $1,500 to $3,500. A full run from the house to the boundary is $4,000 to $9,000 depending on length and access. The excavation figure comes alongside so you can compare.
